I have not known a summer like it for wind. It has made getting out on the kayak difficult and has resulted in a situation where whatever chances present themselves just have to be taken.

Life for the last four years has been a balancing act between trying to juggle college, ‘work’ commitments, fatherhood and fishing, to name a few. One of the juggling balls has been set aside.

With all exams officially finished it was time to get back to doing what I love doing. The Galway weather was glorious this evening and it made for a glassy sea on the bay.

I had not been afloat for a couple of weeks before today. Very high winds have lashed the west coast of Ireland as one storm follows another. The stormy weather also brought with it the birth of my son.

I was given a half day today and with a light breeze there was always only going to be one way that I was going to spend it. Off into Connemara with the kayak and fishing gear!

An unusually sunny September evening had to be capitalised on and there was only ever going to be one way to do that; kayak fishing. Today I had company on the water.

The new college timetable was seen today. It has good and bad aspects to it. It does allow for a kayak fishing session on Mondays which is a good start. Some of the other days look promising too!

After a very busy few weeks finishing up college and training for my summer post with the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation, I finally managed to get a short session of quality fishing in.

When most people have had enough is when we decided to start. With light well and truly gone we packed up the kayaks and launched from a Dublin harbour.

It has been a very long time (16 days) since I have been able to get the kayak out onto the water. To me, that is an eternity.
