Life for the last four years has been a balancing act between trying to juggle college, ‘work’ commitments, fatherhood and fishing, to name a few. One of the juggling balls has been set aside.

With all exams officially finished it was time to get back to doing what I love doing. The Galway weather was glorious this evening and it made for a glassy sea on the bay.

After having such fun the previous day I decided to go back for more. The fish had nit yet spawned and I knew there was a chance of a real monster over the next couple of days.

The last post I had written came after storms Abigail, Barney, Clodagh and Desmond had wreaked havoc. We have since been visited by Eva and Frank is currently knocking on my windows.

I had not been afloat for a couple of weeks before today. Very high winds have lashed the west coast of Ireland as one storm follows another. The stormy weather also brought with it the birth of my son.

Anglers have to be the eternal optimists, I can’t think of any other reason for subjecting ourselves to deplorable weather and temperatures in the hopes of finding a monster.

I have had only one go at the hounds this year and that was from a charter, a far cry from a kayak! That fact had to be rectified and what better time to do it than on a bank holiday?

With the wind still blowing hard I decided that the best option would be to stay inland and find sheltered water. Local knowledge told me that roach are amassing in large numbers, getting ready for their spawning run.
