I’m still on the hunt for a couple of deeper spots on the Corrib that are safe enough for the kayak and within reasonable paddling distance.
With a half day today I decided that I would go and have a look at another area of the map. A couple of people had suggested the area so I thought I would go and give it a look.
I feared that the bay may be too shallow to hold decent pike stocks through the colder months and the echo sounder confirmed this. I didn’t find anywhere to warrant further inspection this winter but it will be an area worth visiting come the early summer.
I cast about a couple of lures for a while, each cast pulling weed as it hit the bottom. Definitely an area for surface plugs and shallow divers. But not now.
As I was returning to the boat slip I met another angler who had been trolling the lake and picking up a couple of jack pike. He told me what I wanted to hear; deeper water very close to the shore another short drive up the road. I’ll investigate that before the week ends.
As ever, the Corrib sunset was stunning. A beautiful backdrop for the paddle home.
