With all exams officially finished it was time to get back to doing what I love doing. The Galway weather was glorious this evening and it made for a glassy sea on the bay.

With the second last exam of my degree done and a 10 day study break before the final exam the only logical thing for me to do was to drive to the other side of the country to go fishing!

For too long fisheries management in Ireland has resulted in the removal of an apex predator in an attempt to protect trout numbers. It was time for pike anglers to have their say.

St. Patrick’s Day used to be a three day session but for quite a good few years I have made the point of foregoing the nonsense and getting afloat instead.

I was saddened, angered, worried, incredulous, mystified but ultimately not surprised when I heard the news that predator control will resume on selected lakes in Ireland, overseen by Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The last post I had written came after storms Abigail, Barney, Clodagh and Desmond had wreaked havoc. We have since been visited by Eva and Frank is currently knocking on my windows.

I had not been afloat for a couple of weeks before today. Very high winds have lashed the west coast of Ireland as one storm follows another. The stormy weather also brought with it the birth of my son.
